Fasting has been used across many cultures to promote or even restore health.
Modern studies indicate that fasting promotes longevity. People who fast literally live longer and healthier lives.
Many religions include fasting as a regular regimen of health by fasting monthly or even yearly.
One of my martial art teachers taught us to fast three days. He proceeded one day with water, one day without food, and another day with water. This allowed our digestive systems to clear and be cleaned out.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a fast once a month to give what they would spend to those that need help. This fasting once a month is the equivalent of 24 hours without food. In many religions fasting, prayer, and giving go together hand in hand.
Recent studies have indicated that daily fasting restores the health and promotes longevity. Intermittent fasting of 10-16 hours allows the digestive track to completely clear, rest, and recover.
The hardest work we will ever do is digestion. The idea of emptying the gut to allow the body enough time to rest becomes the way our body regenerates the most regenerated part of our body. The stomach lining remakes itself every 7 to 10 days. The intestinal walls remake themselves every 2 to 4 days. Fasting serves as a buffer between that hard work and the gut's opportunity to rest.
